Watch the trailer of Indian mystery thriller BYOMKESH BAKSHI

Acclaimed Indian writer – director Dibakar Banerjee (Khosla ka ghosla, Love Sex aur Dhokha) is coming up with a mystery thriller based on the detective Byomkesh Bakshi. Writer Saradindu Bandhopaddhyay had created the character of Byomkesh inspired from Sherlock Holmes.

The film is set against the backdrop of World War II. In the early 1940’s when Calcutta is war torn and crimes are increasing in the town, a young boy leaves the college and decides to become a detective as a hobby. He gets his first case, that of a mysterious murder though the investigations are riddled with difficulties due to the city being full of Japanese spies and a female involved in the case being far smarter than he had anticipated.

A trailer of the film is available now online. What looks really impressive in this trailer is the depiction of Calcutta in the 1940’s be it the costumes, hairstyles, locations, the properties and even the mannerism of the characters. Indian films are generally criticized for doing less research when it comes to period movies, but this film indeed proves that even in India a good period film can be made.

Sushant Singh Rajput plays the role of Byomkesh Bakshi and looks promising in the trailer. Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee is playing the love interest of the detective. The screenplay is written by Dibakar along with Urmi Juvekar (Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye). The film, produced by Aditya Chopra is releasing on the 3rd of April’2015 under the banner of Yash Raj films.
