Saif Ali Khan to act in the Indian remake of a Japanese mystery thriller

The 2005 Japanese mystery thriller novel, THE DEVOTION OF SUSPECT X is going to have an Indian film adaptation. The novel written by Keigo Higashino has been adapted in Japanese, Korean and English languages so far. Now in India, the right for adapting the novel has been purchased by Ekta Kapoor for Balaji Telefilms. Director Sujoy Ghosh (Kahaani) is on board to direct the Indian adaptation with Saif Ali Khan to play one of the two male protagonists of the film.

The story of the novel revolves around a divorced single mother Yasuko who works in a restaurant and lives with her daughter. When her ex husband shows up one day at her apartment and tries to extort money threatening to kill her daughter, the mother-daughter ended up killing him. Their neighbor who is a teacher hears the commotion and on discovering the incident offers his help in disposing the body. Their cover up seemed successful until a detective investigating the case smells foul play in this. Now at one side the detective is trying his best to solve the crime while the teacher is doing his best to save Yasuko.

The novel is considered innovative regarding the build up of its characters and the atmosphere of the story. It won numerous awards in Japan and all over the world and is considered among the top ten mystery novels in Japan.

The other cast members of the Indian adaptation are yet not decided though speculations are of Vidya Balan coming in as the single widow mother. Other names, which rumored to join in, are of Naseeruddin shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
