Where is our yesteryear horror queen?

We hear that Indian actress Bipasha Basu is claiming to be the latest horror queen. She might be right in saying so as her last three movies were horror – Atma, Creature and Alone. However the title of horror queen was long reserved by another Indian actress – Urmila Matondkar. We really do wonder where is she now and what could’ve been her outlook regarding this claim.

Urmila has done some great roles in Indian horror films; most of them directed by her mentor Ram Gopal Verma. Her most acclaimed performance is from the movie Bhoot. She has played Swati, a housewife living alone in a suburban apartment of Mumbai with her husband. The flat was haunted and after some strange incidents the ghost possesses her. She brought the real trauma of a possessed woman on screen with her brilliant acting and went on to earn a Filmfare award for the same. Some of her other notable performances in horror films were in Naina (the unofficial Hindi remake of The EYE) and Kaun. She was called queen of horror films as only a handful of mainstream actors/actresses did horror films in India.

Urmila started working in films as a child actress and got recognition from Shekhar Kapoor’s family drama Masoom. It was her association with director Ram Gopal Verma, which took her to the top of her career. However lately she has been missing from the scene for quite some time. Her last known association was a Hindi animated film, Delhi Safari where she dubbed for a character along with some small assignments in TV serials and playing a judge in reality TV shows.
