Indian thriller NH10 brings laurels for the makers

Director Navdeep Singh might have taken a sigh of relief now as his latest thriller NH10 has not only went on to win critical acclaim but is also doing well on the box office. I am saying this because Navdeep was waiting for this moment from a long time. His first directorial film Manorama 6 Ft under was a brilliant suspense thriller but even after being appreciated by critics, the film got a lukewarm response from the audience and is in fact one of the highly underrated Indian film of the last decade. Then again Navdeep embarked on making India’s first zombie film titled Rock The Shaadi with Abhay Deol, but the film went into several problems and is still not ready for release.

NH10 is produced by Indian star Anushka Sharma, who has also played the lead role in the film. The story is about a girl, who goes on a highway trip with her boyfriend (played by Neil Bhoopalam) to escape the recent traumas in her life. But in the peaceful backdrop of India’s rural land, they meet someone who for the honour of his family will kill anyone, even his dearest. Now the faceoff is between this urban couple and a brutal killer (a brilliant performance by Darshan Kumaar), with Anushka fighting not only her inner demons but also an almost invincible enemy.

Certainly the movie takes inspiration from British horror Eden Lake at several places, but it has an entirely different backdrop and treatment. Eden Lake tells the story of a couple spending a weekend near a lake where some local kids continuously bully them and a small confrontation with them puts their life in danger. As per the box office figures NH10 has recovered its cost and making profits. So now we can hope that Rock The Shaadi sees the light of day.
