Bhootnath Returns fails to outshine the first part

All loved the ghost, who couldn’t scare a kid and subsequently become his friend. This emotional and fun loving character Bhootnath played by superstar Amitabh Bachchan attained critical and box office success in 2008.

The sequel Bhootnath Returns, released on 11th April 2014 is no match with its predecessor. While the first part did a business of Rs 68 Crore on a budget of Rs 20 crore, this part even after huge promotions has done so far a business of Rs 39 Crore only being made on a higher budget of Rs 34 Crore. The film is also not well received overseas with Box Office collections being a paltry Rs. 3 Crore only.

The film got mixed reviews from critics, mainly appreciating the performance of Amitabh Bachchan and criticizing the extended drama on voting awareness and a flat plot line. Producer Bhushan Kumar did his best to give the brand a better awareness than the first part but writer-director Nitesh Tiwari’s preachy script couldn’t find a place in the kids’ hearts.
